About the Program

Beyond Tomorrow Scholars have already come to UBC through their community, volunteer, extracurricular, and leadership experiences.Scholars are expected to participate in enriched and dedicated programming that is shaped by four value propositions and two values, joy and belonging described below.

Your leadership journey continues

We see your time at UBC as an extension of your interests and experiences, and we provide you with annual programming that supports your leadership journey.

Whether you are the first to raise your hand, show up in incremental and powerful ways, or are still figuring out what leadership means to you, you are in the right place.

As a program, we emphasize the little “l” in leadership and embrace space for different types and ways of leading. Our definition of leadership was created with you—our Black scholars—in mind. It’s shaped by the wisdom of Black feminists, activists, artists, and thinkers, such as Bell Hooks, Malcolm X, Nina Simone, Audre Lorde, Kendrick Lamar, and more. These leaders showed us that leadership doesn’t always look like being the boss or the loudest person in the room. Leadership can be quiet and reflective. It can come from pain or joy, from rest or resistance. What connects them all is a commitment to truth, justice, and transformation.

We believe leadership means loving yourself and your community deeply. It means finding the courage to speak up, the strength to rest, and the power to define your path. In this program, you’ll learn that leadership is not about changing who you are—it’s about stepping fully into who you’ve always been. And in doing so, you’ll help shape a future that goes far beyond tomorrow.

Our Definition…

leadership is a fluid, influential practice rooted in love, agency, care, and knowing yourself. It means embracing your unique identities, using your voice and strengths, learning from your experiences, and co-creating your UBC journey to build something that lasts beyond tomorrow.

This leadership challenges and reshapes systemic barriers, equipping you to define who you’re meant to be, and lifts others as you grow.

We cannot wait to be part of your journey!
